Allegiance is the political layer the way faith is the spiritual one. One oath, standing earned by deeds, friendlier ground where your banner flies and trouble where it does not. The two systems rhyme and never merge: a Thornhold blade who worships a dark god is a legal citizen with a disturbing church, and both facts are allowed to matter.
The banners
- Caer Vaneth: seated at Caer Vaneth, in Auldmere. Its mark is the mountain clasp, and it leans to defense.
“Keep the passes, feed the watch, never open the gate to flattery.” - Thornhold: seated at Thornhold, in Karan. Its mark is the second-wall seal, and it leans to resolve.
“The roads are safe because the sentence for making them unsafe is carried out.” - Sunhaven: seated at Sunhaven, in Sereth. Its mark is the tide ring, and it leans to trade.
“Everything comes back: cargo, ships, favours, debts.” - the Old King's Banner: seated at Ashfall, in Vashen. Its mark is the ash-blackened crown coin, and it leans to damage.
“No protection, no law, and no taxes either.”
Breaking it
Forswearing marks you a turncoat for 7 days of real time, doubled if you cross to a banner yours is opposed to. The oath is meant to cost something, or swearing it means nothing.
