On an iPad: download it, then sign in or create an account on the first screen.
From a terminal: any MUD client:

Plain telnet is not encrypted, including the password you type. See the Privacy Policy. The apps connect over TLS.

Your account
I cannot sign in
If you have forgotten your password, type forgot at the name prompt when you connect and we will email you a reset code. Codes last a few minutes and work once.
I signed up with Apple. Where is my password?
Use the Sign in with Apple button rather than a password. There may not be a password on your account at all, and that is normal.
I want to delete my account
You can do it yourself, from Settings inside the app. We ask for your password to confirm, the account locks immediately, and everything is deleted fourteen days later. Signing in before then cancels it as though you had never asked.
No app? Email us from the address on the account and we will do it for you. What is kept and what goes is set out in the Privacy Policy.
Is my character the same on iPad and in a terminal?
Yes. One account, one world, two doors: sign in from either and you are the same person standing in the same room. Nothing transfers because nothing needs to.
Can I have more than one character?
Yes. Your account holds a character list, and you land on it when you sign in. Slots are limited so a name means somebody, but you are not limited to one life.
Getting in, and playing
I keep getting disconnected
The apps reconnect by themselves and put you back where you were; if that is failing, tell us what your connection is and roughly when. If you play with a terminal client, check it is pointed at the current address, shown under Getting in above.
The colors are hard to read, or I am colorblind
In the game, the colors command carries whole schemas: a high-contrast set, a colorblind preset, and room to save your own. On this website, the accessibility panel in the corner has themes, text sizes and a plain-card reading mode. Neither asks you to live with a default that fights you.
Where do I learn the commands?
Type help anywhere in the game. The full searchable reference lives at the command reference, with a printable cheat sheet, and it is generated from the game so it cannot describe a version nobody plays.
I have never played a MUD. Where do I start?
Start with what this is, then take the iPad door: tappable exits, a live map and a searchable help pane carry you through the first hour. The world does the rest; it was built to be read.
When does something happen in the world?
The Hall of Lore carries the world calendar: festivals, battlegrounds, the Spire reset, all shown in your own timezone. There is a subscribe link there and in the footer, so the schedule can live in the calendar you actually read.
Purchases
I paid for something and did not get it
Purchases made in the app go through Apple, including refunds; Apple can act on those faster than we can. Purchases made on this website go through Stripe; email us and we will sort it out. Either way, tell us and we will make sure the entitlement reaches your account.
How do refunds work?
App purchases are refunded through Apple, from your purchase history on the device. Website purchases are refunded by us through Stripe; email us from the address on the account and say roughly when you paid.
Conduct and safety
Someone is harassing me, or breaking the rules
Report it in the game so staff get the context automatically, or email us with the character name and roughly when it happened. You do not need proof or a transcript. Tell us and we will look.
If it is urgent or you would rather not say it in public, email is fine and stays private.
What are the rules?
The Terms of Use hold the letter of them. The spirit is shorter: the world is shared, the people in it are real, and staff act on reports.

I use a screen reader
The game is text from the ground up, which is the best starting position a game can have, and the apps and this site are built to keep it. If anything in the game, the apps or these pages is unusable with your assistive technology, that is a bug and we want the report; see the accessibility statement for where we stand.
The world
What is Eldermere? What is the First Volume?
The Auldmere Chronicles is the whole work; Eldermere is the first world in it, the one your character enters, which is why it is called the First Volume. When there is a second world, your account will be able to hold characters in both.
