Vashen's first orchard was the old kingdom's pride, the proof that the dry south could be made to bear, and the dragonfire took it to the root in the war's first month. The roots disagreed. Once a year, on no calendar the living keep, the burned rows bear: black fruit on charcoal boughs, one night only, and the pickers who come out of the ash rows to gather it are not farmers and were not hired.
What the fruit is, and to whose table it is carried, is one of the Chronicle's older open files. The pickers work in silence, glean with terrible care, and deliver their baskets into the deep ash toward the old capital, which is to say toward the Old King's ground. The orchard's motto, cut on the gate the fire spared, has acquired a second reading nobody wanted: WHAT VASHEN PLANTS, VASHEN REAPS.
