Denizen

Cervid

A tall stag carrying a wide many-tined rack, forelegs braced and head turned.

How it fights

A predator fights like something that has done this before and expects to again. It opens carefully, watches what you do with the first exchange, and commits only when the answer suits it. Nothing about it is overwhelming and nothing about it is forgiving either: it will take any opening you leave, and it is patient enough to wait for one rather than make its own.

Field notes

The great stags are met at the wood's edge at first and last light and nowhere in the middle of the day. Through most of the year they go before you, and in the roaring season they do not, and a stag that stands and turns its head is telling you which season it is. The rack is not for show; it is for other stags and it will serve on you. Trees barked white at the height of the head mark the ground it is holding.

Where it is met

Met in the Deep Undercroft, the Whispering Wood, Ridge of Inner Sea, Grove of Southern Marches, Weald of Karan Heartland, Old Wold, Caer Vaneth and Gloamgrove, by travellers of levels 5 to 30.
