The cavern was a provisioning cave in the old kingdom's day, seeded with a hardy food-fungus against siege years. The siege that came was the onslaught, the provisioners died above with everyone else, and the crop grew unharvested and unchecked until it stopped being a crop and became a COUNTRY: weather of its own, seasons of its own, spore-falls the deep folk mark their calendars by.
The deeps matter now because they are growing UPWARD. The bloom-fronts gain a gallery a year, patient as any of the world's other patient things, and the alchemists' guilds pay raid-wages for what the deep beds yield precisely because their masters remember what the fungus was bred FOR: to outlast a war. The Chronicle's marginal note on the Spore Deeps is short. The old kingdom planted this against a catastrophe it saw coming. It is still growing. Ask what it still expects.
The Spore Deeps lies in —. Adventurers of levels 22–30 find their measure here.
