Thornhold's founders burned their records in the town's first generation, thoroughly, and the Book of the Second Wall spends four careful pages not saying why. The Unwritten Library is why, and where, and the bargain under the town's whole history: the founders did not destroy their truth, they DEPOSITED it, hiring the thing below the hills to burn every page and keep every burning, deniable above, preserved below, the founder's oldest trick played at the scale of a town's conscience.
The Librarian has kept the account three centuries: the charred stacks read like a wound and are in fact a VAULT, and the restored shelves beside them are its long patient act of re-binding what it burned, white volumes waiting for their words to be earned back. One shelf stands apart under the deep's only lamp: sixteen finished blank books labelled THE KEPT MEMORY, bound in advance for the sixteen fragments the Hall of Lore above waits to assemble, begun before the Hall of Lore was built. The library knows the world's missing history is coming home, and has prepared its shelving, and the Chronicle needs one thing from the dark stacks: the founders' bargain itself, burned and kept like everything else, naming what Thornhold paid, and what it bought silence ON, and for how long the silence was purchased.
