The bridge crossed the Sundering when the Sundering was a river gorge and not a wound in the world, and it broke at the middle in the same convulsion that made the rift what it is. Both halves kept their garrisons, and the garrisons kept their standards, and three centuries of separate weather have made of them two nations that will not concede the other exists: the near half holds that the far half fell, the far half holds the same of the near, and each patrols to the broken edge and looks across at what it insists is a ghost.
The Span matters to the Chronicle twice over. It is the only structure that ever crossed the Sundering, which the deep surveys say is not empty; and its breaking is the one event both the drowned records and the ice records date to the same night, a night neither the crowns' histories nor the Old King's ledger marks at all. Something happened at the world's middle that every archive at the world's edges wrote down and the world's own capital did not. The Span is where you go to stand in the missing entry.
