Every history of the onslaught opens somewhere else: the burning of Vashen's capital, the muster fields, the treaty. This coast is what the histories skip, the actual first ground, a fishing shore of no strategic worth where the ash began falling out of a clear sky three days before the first dragon was seen anywhere in the world. The villagers lit their beacon, inland answered, and then the war happened to everywhere else, and the coast that warned the world was left to the grey.
The ash has never stopped falling here, thin and patient and out of nothing, and the Chronicle's opening questions are all buried under it. Why did the ash come BEFORE the fire. Why does the ground where it came ashore fall upward. What was the First Brand before it burned, and why does the oldest thing on the coast stand in its glass scar like a sentry still on post, grateful to anyone who finally comes to ask. New hunters are sent here by the crowns' chroniclers for exactly that reason: the war's whole story starts on this shingle, and the shingle has been waiting three centuries for someone to read it.
The First Ash lies in —. Adventurers of levels 10–16 find their measure here.
