The magma gallery has been a forge since before the deep folk kept records: something works metal down there that needs no tools, no bellows and no light, and resents visitors who bring them. The old kingdom traded with it once, say the oldest ledgers, lowering ore and raising blades of a quality no surface smith has matched, until a royal armourer asked to watch the work and the trade ended that day, three centuries of custom cancelled without a word of explanation.
Durgan's priesthood holds the Emberdeep to be the Forgewright's own first workshop, which their doctrine requires and their behaviour contradicts: the forge-god's own clergy will not go below the third gallery. What the raids bring back suggests why. The deep forge is not making blades any more. The moulds cooling in the black galleries are large, and articulated, and the Chronicle's metallurgists, shown the rubbings, said the same thing the armourer's guild said, and then asked, carefully, how many moulds.
The Emberdeep lies in —. Adventurers of levels 32–40 find their measure here.
