The shelf is where the northern glacier meets the sea and gives birth, bergs the size of towns groaning off the face in thunder heard a day's sail out. The noise is the point. Somewhere under the calving front, something enormous is using three centuries of thunder as cover, and the clans have charted its workings the only way the ice allows: by what the bergs carry away. Worked stone. Dressed timber of no northern tree. Once, famously, a ship's figurehead no yard in the world claims.
The Chronicle's readers place the Shelf beside the north's other waking things, the thaw blooms and the walking dead of the deep ice, and note the shared direction: everything under the white is moving, and the Shelf is where the moving is LOUDEST. What is being built, or unburied, or launched under the calving front will surface on its own schedule. The raids sent onto the shelf are the world's attempt to read the schedule first.
