Denizen

Amphibian

A hunched amphibian, wet mottled skin and long-fingered hands, throat sac swelling.

How it fights

A skirmisher will not stand and trade, and cannot be made to. It arrives, cuts, and is somewhere else before your answer lands, and the frustration of swinging at the space it just left is not a side effect of the fight but most of how it is won. There is very little of it to kill. Catching it is the entire problem, and everything spent on empty air is spent all the same.

Field notes

The great amphibians sit at the water's edge and sing after dark, and the song stops when something comes near, and it stopping is the warning. They take what comes to drink with the tongue and swallow it whole and sit down again. In the dry months they go into the mud and are not there, and in the first rain they are everywhere at once. Their eggs hang in the reeds in ropes.
