Four banners, one oath.
Allegiance is the political layer the way faith is the spiritual one. You swear to one crown, your standing is earned by deeds, and where you stand matters: aligned ground is friendlier, opposed ground is not.
The banners. Caer Vaneth holds the passes of Auldmere. Thornhold keeps Karan's roads, and keeps them by carrying out the sentence for making them unsafe. Sunhaven is the third of the lawful three. The Old King's Banner is the fourth, and it is not one of them.
Swearing. swear <banner> takes the oath, allegiance (or banner) shows where you stand, and forswear breaks it. Breaking an oath marks you a turncoat for a week of real time, and doubled if you cross to a banner your own is opposed to, so the choice is meant to cost something.
Rank. Eight of them, from Sworn up through Guard of the Seal to Voice of the Crown, each with a standing floor. Standing comes from deeds and from missions; from Guard of the Seal onward the missions are group work with others of your kingdom. Your insignia is worn, and it is read by everyone who sees you.
