Denizen

Insect

A cluster of chitinous insects, wings and jointed legs overlapping into one mass.

How it fights

A swarm is not one fight. It is the same small fight over and over until you are sick of it. Singly they are nothing worth the name. Together they are a subtraction that never quite stops, and whatever you spend on one of them is wasted on all the rest. What finishes people here is rarely damage. It is attrition, and the temptation to clear just one more room before resting.

Field notes

The great insects come in numbers and the numbers are the thing. They swarm in the warm months and lie low in the cold, and a nest found in winter is a nest that will be a country in summer. They follow scent trails and the trails can be seen if you look for the line of bare ground. They do not retreat and they do not learn. Smoke sends them down and fire sends them up.
