Denizen

Draconic

A small wingless drake, scaled and long-tailed, a crest of spines running back from the skull.

How it fights

A predator fights like something that has done this before and expects to again. It opens carefully, watches what you do with the first exchange, and commits only when the answer suits it. Nothing about it is overwhelming and nothing about it is forgiving either: it will take any opening you leave, and it is patient enough to wait for one rather than make its own.

Field notes

The lesser drakes lie in sun-warmed hollows and among warm stone, and they are the reason the hot springs have no birds. They hunt along the ground in short rushes and go back to the warmth between, and a cold drake is a slow one. Where there is one there is a brood, and the brood is in the warmest crack. They will eat carrion, which is a mercy, because they are not choosy about what counts.

Where it is met

Met in Ridge of Scoured Country, Sweetwater Oasis of Ash Interior and Blind Undercroft, by travellers of levels 20 to 35.
