Denizen

Aquatic

A thick-bodied deep-water predator, ridged dorsal spines and a wide jaw crowded with backward teeth.

How it fights

A brute fights the way a falling tree fights. Once it is coming the only question is where you are standing. It gives ground grudgingly and takes it back all at once, and it hits hard enough that a mistake is not a setback but the end of the conversation. There is no clever way through one. There is only whether you can take what it gives for as long as it takes to give more back.

Field notes

The deep hunters come up where the water is dark and the shallows drop away fast, and they follow the shoals and the boats that follow the shoals. One will circle a swimmer for a long time before it decides, and the circle is what to watch for, not the fin. They come nearer to shore at dusk and in murk. Blood in the water carries further than sound and brings more than one.

Where it is met

Met in the Toll of the South Passage, the Spawning Shelf, Hollow Sea Cave, Salt Spawning Deep, the Barbed Hold, the Hollow Blowhole, the Roaring Blowhole and Salt Hold, by travellers of levels 5 to 40.
