The Spawning Shelf has bloomed a season early and a hundredfold too thick: the reef's hatch came all at once, and the shallows off Sereth boil with new-hatched hunters, every blind and arch of the young coral defended by something with an appetite and no memory of fear. The ferry lines pay bounties by the basket and the baskets come in full and the shallows do not thin. The Landing's old pilots read the bloom the way farmers read a red sky: the reef does not overspawn without a reason, and the reason is usually something the reef is feeding against.
