Deepfall

Deepfall is the city under the Ashen Stair: Ashfall above, Deepfall below, one grief with two addresses. It was the old capital's undercity, cellars and cisterns and the deep forges, and when the burning came it did what undercities do: it survived, and took in everyone who reached the stairs. Three centuries on it is the underworld's true capital, where the deep roads meet, the deep forge trade clears, and the Still Ferryman's passengers buy their last provisions. Deepfall's law is the lamp-law, older than the treaty: light is shared, dark is private, and what a citizen does beyond the last lamp is between them and the deep.
