The Remembered is reached by rite: so runs the temple law, and the law is true and incomplete. Rites are doors, doors have two sides, and at a ruined gate-town in the Auldmere hills the far side has begun to stand ajar on its own. Through the standing arch the old kingdom continues, swept and lit and three centuries deep in its kept past, and the threshold between has started to FLICKER, ruin and wholeness alternating by paces, the memory pressing outward into the world that abandoned it.
The town on the far side knows things the new world forgot: harvest years no field remembers, a proclamation crisp with tomorrow's date, a lamplighter three centuries into her evening round who will discuss the old kingdom as present fact and dim the whole street if pressed on the burning. And in the swept square at the town's heart stands the rite made architecture, the Door itself, latch on the near side, opened lately from WITHIN, more than once, left each time a little longer ajar. The Awakening starts here: the Remembered is stirring on its own side, the memory is beginning to walk toward the moment it has spent three centuries avoiding, and something has taken up a warden's post at the Door that expects, courteously, to be relieved. The Chronicle's file on this raid carries the v2 arc's opening line: a kept memory has a keeper, and the keeper has begun delegating.
