The first road in the world crossed its first river here, and every faith arrived at the crossing with the same revelation and the same refusal: the ford is sacred, and it is OURS. Eight shrines face each other across the water, eight banks' worth of claim and counter-claim three thousand years deep, the pantheon's whole politics compressed into one wet quarter-mile: Aurel facing Morvath, Kastor's line drawn against Draegar, Sylvane's roots under three neighbours' foundations, and the ninth space at the altar-ring's centre swept clean by every faith in turn, each insisting it does so only because the others fail.

The crowns tried once to adjudicate the ford and retreated inside a season; the treaty's marker lies face down on the far bank where eight congregations left it. Only the Fordkeeper holds the peace, claimless, barefoot on the ninth stone, keeping the post by the one rite all eight accept: whoever stands the stone against all comers keeps the ford. The exposure rules run at full volume here, every blow watched and scored by all eight at once, and the Chronicle sends its raiders in with one standing note: the ninth space at the ring's centre is the oldest empty place in the world, and the gods' three-thousand-year quarrel over the ford has always read less like greed than like eight heirs arguing over a chair none of them dares be seen to sit in.
