Guard of the Seal, Knight of the Seal, Commander, Voice of the Crown: the four kingdoms' ladders of honour all climb toward a thing none of their orders can produce, describe, or locate, and the orders have stopped noticing the gap at the top of their own titles. The Sealkeep is the gap, standing in the Auldmere hills at the end of a road every map carries, unfound for eight centuries not because it hides but because it FILES: every survey that reaches its walls records the next valley, every memory of its gate goes soft within a day's ride, and the keep keeps its own roll instead, every name ever sworn to any Seal rank, current to this morning, cut in stone by no hand.

The Seal itself stands in the keep's heart, physical at last: a plain grey disc whose one mark also closes the treaty, which means the four crowns' founding document was sealed with an object none of their archives has ever held. The first oath, sworn on the bailey's standing stone before the kingdoms existed, is the spring every rank descends from, and its words are lost to every order that repeats their descendants daily. The keep's warden asks each visitor for the first line. Eight hundred years of visitors have failed, and the Chronicle wants the failure understood at last, because the Worldsedge garrison's missing word and the Sealkeep's unanswerable question have begun, in the newest scholarship, to look like the same sentence.
