Ashfall's histories make the Old King the treaty's villain: the crown that would not sign, the kingdom that burned for its pride, the herald in the ash keeping a dead man's claim alive. The sealed court below the Deep Crypt keeps the version the treaty's winners buried. His kingdom was the LARGEST of the old realms and the first to fight, it held the line at its own cost while the future signatories fell back, and the treaty he refused to sign carried a clause the four surviving crowns have never published: the partition of his still-burning realm among its rescuers.
He would not sign his kingdom's dismemberment, and the four sealed him below his own capital with the honours of a fallen enemy and the silence of embarrassed heirs, and the empty fifth space on the treaty has hung there ever since, the size of a name. The court he holds below is trying his own case, three centuries in deliberation: whether pride or principle kept the pen from his hand, whether the ash above is on his account or on the four's. He has not allowed a verdict. The session that never rose is the Chronicle's deepest Vashen secret, and every allegiance sworn in the world above, every Seal rank and banner mission, descends from the settlement made over his sealed doors. The kingdoms are built on his 'no'. He is still deciding if it was the right one.
