The chronicles all say the dragonkin CAME, and for three centuries nobody thought to press the verb: came from where. The Maw is the answer, the burrow the onslaught boiled up out of, ringed in heat-glazed stone under the Vashen deep rock, and the answer, entered, becomes a worse question. The flight-gouges all point UP the tunnels. The clutch-chambers were abandoned with the care of a people who did not expect to return. The lowest galleries were sealed behind them, melted shut ring upon ring, from above.
The dragonkin were not invading. They were EVACUATING, upward, out of the deep dark and through our world, and the onslaught was the shape their fear took when a fleeing nation met a kingdom in its path. What they fled from is still below: the cold diggings under the melt-rings, the swept floor, the broken place at the bottom where their eldest stands three centuries of rearguard alone. The Chronicle's whole account of the war turns on this ground, and the Firstborn at the bottom of it is not the raid's enemy so much as its terrible librarian: everything it guards, it guards from below, and it has been waiting a long time for the world above to stop hating it long enough to ask why.
