The deepest room the old kingdom ever built was not a treasury. The treasuries are higher up, looted generations since. The Last Vault lies below them all, at the bottom of a stair built in the kingdom's final year at ruinous cost in a realm already losing a war, and it was sealed FROM THE INSIDE, by masons who stayed, whose names close the stair's long roll, under the phrase the scholars still argue: HERE WE KEEP THE KEEPING.

The seal has recently been worked at from within. Not forced: WORKED AT, patiently, skilfully, the way its own masons would work, and the scrape of it carries up the stair on still nights. The Chronicle pairs the Vault with the Scoured Capital's empty strongroom and lets the pairing speak: the onslaught's first act was to search a vault, and the old kingdom's last act was to fill one, and seal it from within, and stay with the thing sealed. What the kingdom judged worth its last masons is on the far side of a door that has begun, after three hundred years, to open.
