A vault off your body, a lease on the key, and two ledgers.
THE VAULT. In any bank bank shows your vault, balance, lease and slots. bank deposit <item> and bank withdraw <item> move goods in and out; bank deposit gold <n> and bank withdraw gold <n> move coin. A vault starts at twenty-five slots and bank expand buys ten more a time. What is in the vault survives death, fire and the corpse run.
THE LEASE. Vault access is rented: 300 gold buys thirty days. bank renew [periods] extends it; bank autorenew on renews from your balance for a small fee. A LAPSED lease locks the vault: your goods are safe inside and untouchable until you renew, and nothing is lost on the day it lapses. Left lapsed and uninsured for ninety days, a vault is liquidated. bank insure (2,500 gold, once) guarantees your goods indefinitely, lease or no lease.
THE TWO LEDGERS. The bank keeps a SURFACE ledger and a DEEP ledger, and where you stand decides which books you work: every surface bank keeps the surface's, the Deepfall Ledger keeps the deep's. Gold and goods cross between them only by THE STAIR: bank transfer <n> starts gold climbing or descending on the Consortium's escorted run, taking real hours to arrive and paying the stair duty (the climb costs more than the descent); bank ship <item> consigns a vault item the same way; bank pending lists what is still on the stairs.
