How it fights

A predator fights like something that has done this before and expects to again. It opens carefully, watches what you do with the first exchange, and commits only when the answer suits it. Nothing about it is overwhelming and nothing about it is forgiving either: it will take any opening you leave, and it is patient enough to wait for one rather than make its own.

Field notes

The great mustelids are digging things, low and long, and they go into the ground faster than a man can go across it. They hunt the burrows of everything smaller and take the fowl-house when the burrows are empty. One will fight anything that corners it and many things that do not, and it will not let go of what it has bitten. Fresh spoil at a hole with a run of flattened grass leading to it is a sett in use.
