How it fights
A brute fights the way a falling tree fights. Once it is coming the only question is where you are standing. It gives ground grudgingly and takes it back all at once, and it hits hard enough that a mistake is not a setback but the end of the conversation. There is no clever way through one. There is only whether you can take what it gives for as long as it takes to give more back.
Field notes
A crocodilian looks like a log until it does not, and it has been watching the bank longer than you have been on it. It lies where the game comes to drink and takes what leans down. On land it is quick over a short distance and then done, and it knows this, and does not follow far. Slides in the mud where the water meets the bank are its doors, and a bank with many slides is a bank to leave.
The roll
