Buying, selling, and the one bargain a merchant will strike.

Buying, selling, and the one bargain a merchant will strike.

A vendor is anyone with wares: a stall in the market, the outfitter, the smith's counter, a travelling merchant three days from anywhere. shop (also list, wares) shows what they carry and at what price; buy <item> and sell <item> do the trade; appraise <item> asks what they would give for a thing before you commit.

THE ECONOMY LEAKS ON PURPOSE. You buy above an item's worth and sell below it, and every trade takes a little gold out of the world, which is what keeps a coin worth having. Vendors carry finite gold that recovers slowly, buy back only what they deal in (a smith wants weapons, not herbs), and never buy what is bound, quested, vaulted or on your back.

THE HAGGLE. Once per merchant, haggle (also barter) tries for a better price: your chance rises with the trades that make a talker, and the discount is a real one when it lands. Strike your bargain and it holds for that visit; there is no second try, and a merchant who has heard you out is done listening.

Materials and stock differ by region, and the trade board hangs in every settlement's market for what the shops do not carry (help boards). Charts, mounts, ships and hall schematics have their own sellers (help charts, help festivals, help ships).
