Mounts

The map is wide, and a mount is how you cross it faster than walking.

WHAT A MOUNT DOES. On the open map every step is one cell on foot; a mount moves you its REACH in cells for the same step, checking every cell on the way, so a beast that meets a cliff stops at the cliff. Terrain is the interesting part: the sturdy hill pony (reach 2) is unfussy and slow; the long-legged courser, the snow elk, the sand strider and the saddled dire wolf (reach 3) fly on their own ground and slow to a walk off it, plains and farmland for the courser, ice for the elk, desert for the strider, forest and hills for the wolf; the great roc (reach 5) ignores terrain entirely, which is what 1,500 favour buys. So the question is not which is biggest but where you actually travel. mount <beast> (or ride) is up, dismount is down, mounts is what you carry. Combat, zones, settlements and instances put you down: a mount covers distance, it does not fight.

WHERE THEY COME FROM. The festival catalogue sells them for favour earned at the seasonal games (help festivals).

STABLING. A great roc should not live in a backpack. In any settlement stable <mount> leads the beast to the town's stables, where it stays, safe and off your inventory, until you come back FOR IT, TO THAT TOWN, and pay the stabling: 15 gold per point of reach per real day, a day counted the moment you walk in. stable shows what you have boarded, where, and what it owes; stable claim [name] takes one back for the fee. The bill grows but a mount is NEVER sold off or lost for arrears; the stable waits. What you stable in Greyhythe stays in Greyhythe: the towns keep stables, not a teleport network.

THE FINDERS. A mount stamped as yours that is neither on you nor stabled is lost, and the finders who work out of any town's stables will fetch it: stable find lists what they could bring back, stable find <name> pays them 50 gold per point of reach to do it.
