THE CHAIN IS REAL. Ore is smelted into bars, hide is tanned into leather, fibre is woven into cloth. A finished piece needs components from trades other than your own, so crafters need each other.

TWELVE MATERIAL TIERS, and quality is partly your choice and partly luck, a master can still draw a perfect result, and never reliably.
