The Green Tide is what the foresters named the bracken bloom overrunning the wood south of Westmarch, a clearing lost to it every week and the drovers' road next. It is fed by something under the roots that Sylvane's own people will not name, which frightens the shire more than the bracken does, because the Green Mother's people name everything. The crown pays thinning bounties by the cartload, and the wood fills back in behind the cutters like water behind a bailing bucket.
